Panormo is a beautiful seaside fishing village situated on the route between Rethymnon and Heraklio. Built between two bays, it is considered, to be an exceptionally picturesque resort.
It is located on the exact spot where the Ancient Panormo used to be. The Ancient city was one of the hundred locations in Crete that Homer has mentioned in his stories and was the seaport of Eleftherna.
Today Panormo is under the jurisdiction of the city council of Geropotamos, the most populated and largest region in Rethymnon and that has Perama (15΄drive from Nassibe Estate) as its capital. The coastline of the town is 43 kilometers long. Panormo is the most scenic and traditional area in the region and is known for its important monuments and cultural heritage. For instance, the Saint Sofia church in Panormo is thought to be one of the largest basilicas in Crete and its presence marks the paleochristian age.
In the wider area, there are still constant discoveries of Minoan as well as Mycenean findings, like for example the exceptional for Crete closed vaulted tomb dated back to 1300 B.C. that was discovered in Perama during the 1977 excavations. It belongs to the closed vault type with a long steeping 14 meters path, 1.80 meters height and an underground round room with 4.60 meters diameter and 4.50 meters height.
The natural surroundings of the place have a distinct beauty. A great area is covered with olive trees, vines, citrus trees, garden produce, as well as a lot of self-sown locusts. In addition, there are different varieties of self-sown herbs. The river Geropotamos runs through the city, from East to West, and flows into the West side of Panormo. The hydro biotope that exists at the mouth of the river is the natural habitat of different species of birds and reptiles. The shore has been used since antiquity by sea turtles caretta-caretta for laying their eggs during the hot summer months.
